The World of Karakuri Mechanical Dolls
The history of Karakuri ("Karakuri" means the mechanism that drives a machine.) automatic dolls in Japan began in the early Edo period(1603~1867).
The tea-serving doll is the most typical one and it appears in the book written by Ihara Saikaku, a very popular novelist in the Edo period. This Karakuri doll kit is produced according to the gKarakuri Zuih, the only existing manual of Karakuri mechanical dolls written in 1796 by Hosokawa Hanzo, popularly known as Karakuri Hanzo who was an engineer of Tosa domain. Karakuri dolls can be said to be one of the original foams of modern robots. Please enjoy the beauty of Japanese craftsmanship of those days by assembling this kit.

"The Karakuri Mechanical Doll of the Flourishing Edo Period" is an automatic doll restored based on the book in Edo period (1603 - 1867). Carry tea to the customer, and lower the emptying teacup. It is a doll that can be called the starting point of the robot.

It is an automatic adjustment stick that bears the switch mechanism of the start and the stop that synchronizes with the arm.
The arm falls when the teacup is put on the tray, and the stick rises.
The stopper comes off when the stick rises and the cogwheel begins to rotate because this automatic adjustment stick plays the role of the stopper of the cogwheel.
The arm goes up if the teacup is taken, the stopper functions oppositely, and the cogwheel stops.

The doll advances by using power to kick the spring. The spring was directed to use whale's beard in the book in Edo period.
Mechanism of bow ( photograph = c )
Tea carrying doll that bows neatly when tea has been carried. It is a rotation board that controls this operation.
The part of the neck is pulled when the ledge is caught to parts that expand from the neck, and admire.
The pull is released when the ledge comes off, and it returns to original by the spring's working.
Relate to the turn and bow because the rotation board controls the traveling direction.
Mechanism of turnabout ( photograph = d )
It is a small wheel of the bottom that turnabout. The traveling direction changes according to the angle as well as the front wheel of the tricycle. The angle keeps turning to the right while it changes in being pushed with the rotation board, and it is being pushed. The wheel returns to former position when the ledge comes off. The mechanism going straight afterwards. The angle of the turn is freely changed by adjusting the ledge.
Mechanism of foot ( photograph = e )
It moves while the doll moves the foot about ahead.
Completely, to defend manners of tea, and to walk. This has been achieved by moving the center of the rotation axis that controls a right and left center of the driving wheel and the carrying of the foot, and making the crank move.
