Lotus fielded the Honda-powered 99T for the 1987 season, with the cars featuring the vibrant yellow livery of new main sponsor Camel.
Driven by the legendary Ayrton Senna and Satoru Nakajima, the 99T was designed by Gerard Ducarouge and had a powerful 1.5 liter turbocharged engine. Perhaps the most innovative feature of the car was its electronic active suspension, which Senna used to his advantage to score 2 wins and several other podium finishes to take 3rd place overall in the driver's standings that season.
