Produced to meet a Luftwaffe requirement for a new liaison aircraft, the Fi 156 Storch was a light aircraft that had amazing STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) capabilities. The design incorporated such practical features as folding wings, which allowed it to be easily transported, and landing gear shock absorbers that allowed it to land on rough surfaces.

About the He162 Salamander
While the Heinkel company pioneered jet technology with its successful test flight on August 8th, 1938, it lost out to the Messerschmitt Me262 which became the first operational jet fighter. At the final stages of World War II, the Messerschmitt Me262 jet fighter became the main fighter of the German Luftwaffe. Since the Me262 lacked acceleration at low speeds, it was particularly vulnerable at take off. Hence the formation of the Jagdverband 44 special operations air unit, consisting of Focke-Wulf 190 D-9's that flew cover for Me262's.
