About the M1A2 Abrams
The M1 Abrams, officially commissioned by the US military in 1980, was designed totally different from previous post-WWII US military tanks. Although fitted with the same 105mm cannon as the M60, the M1 was powered by a gas turbine engine and was fitted with spaced armor. Planned to be commissioned by the US military over a long period, the M1 was designed with future reforms in mind. In 1984, the M1A1 was developed with a 120mm smooth bore cannon, and a further variant the M1A1HA was later developed featuring depleted uranium armor.

Developed during the early 1980's, the M1 Abrams tank benefited from the latest technological wonders of the time, giving it enormous advantage on any battlefield. The turret, being very angular and squat, had a very roomy interior. This angular design was combined with Chobham armor for excellent protection against the kinetic energy from hollow charge projectiles.

The design for the venerable M60 tank series dates back to the mid 1950's, and had been a mainstay in the U.S. armed forces since then. Mechanization of ground forces first came about during the 1st World War with the introduction of an armoured tracked vehicle fielding a large bore cannon, by England. This vehicle was dubbed "Tank" by Winston Churchill, and the innovation has altered the conduct of warfare to this day.

The U.S. Armoured vehicle test course is located in Aberdeen, Maryland, and is one of the most rigorous and demanding coursed in the world. Early in April 1957, a familiar looking small vehicle was seen to be running over the course with comparitive ease, and upon closer inspection it turned out to be the replacement for the well known Willy's "Jeep", the new Ford M151.

During WWII many countrie did not think that armoured personnel and weapon carriers for conveying infantry and weapons in the battefield were very useful. As the mobility of tanks increased, it became impossible for infantry on foot or in unarmoured wheeled vehicles, partly armoured halftrack personnel carriers, etc., to perform operations in concert with tank troops.

The Light Tank M3 entered production in the Spring of 1940 and in the next three years, many thousands of vehicles of this type were built in several different production forms. The M5A1 was standardised in September 1942 to bring the vehicle into line with the last production model of the M3 series, M3A3.
